The first passenger flight to the Union Glacier Blue-Ice Runway (SCGC) has still not yet left Punta Arenas because of the weather conditions in Antarctica. An unusually large amount of snow has fallen at the start of this summer season in the region, more than has been seen since 1997.

Update from ALE this morning. Highspeed winds are blowing at Union Glacier and it is starting to clear the snow as anticipated. There will be no flight for the team, who continue to wait in Punta Arenas for the right flying conditons.

The team got news this morning from ALE that bad weather at Union Glacier, where the blue ice runway and team’s initial camp is located, mean they cannot fly onto the ice today.

The Winston Wong Bio-Inspired Ice Vehicle, the Science Support Vehicles and most of the Expedition's essential kit left the UK in late September to travel, by a Grimaldi Line container vessel, to South America.

A new engine has been fitted in the Winston Wong Bio-Inspired Ice Vehicle as the Expedition date drawers closer. The original engine was a BMW 1150, adapted to run on E85 bioethanol.
