LONDON SCHOOLCHILDREN ARE ANTARCTIC EXPLORERS FOR THE DAY

Over 100 schoolchildren from Greenwich and Camden took part in a special science day at Imperial College London, as part of their close involvement with the Expedition.
They met members of the team - whose journey across the Antarctic in November and December they will follow from their classrooms – and did hands-on experiments to find out just how hard it is to operate in the coldest, driest and windiest place on earth.

The children were year 6 students from two Greenwich primary schools, Timbercroft and Notre Dame, and one school in Camden, St Patricks. They came to Imperial College with their school ‘champions’, who are leading a number of classroom and other initiatives based on the Antarctic and the Expedition.
As well as seeing the vehicles close up, the children learned about meteorite-gathering and saw how state-of-the-art health monitoring devices would be used by the Expedition team so their heart, breathing and pulse could be measured continuously.

The day at Imperial College London was organised and led by Stefan Algar, a Research Technician there. Stefan is one of a number of enthusiasts at the College who has given voluntary time and expertise to the Expedition; he is also Chair of Governors at Timbercroft Primary School.
