EXPEDITION UPDATE FROM LONDON HEADQUARTERS

They’ve been prepared, packed and on a four-hour standby to fly from Punta Arenas to Antarctica for over a week. The vehicles and big kit are behind security gates in the airport. At their Antarctic destination, Union Glacier, it’s the worst weather and the most delayed start to the Antarctica summer flights for nearly two decades.

The team remain focused and determined. The call will come – and there are now high hopes that it will be soon. And the Moon Regan Transantarctic Expedition will do just what it was always going to do: cross the continent safely and fulfil all the aims of the team, their partner Professor Winston Wong and their science partner Imperial College London.

But there’s a great sadness in the team that the much-anticipated meeting at the South Pole with ‘Expedition VIPs’ including Professor Winston Wong, the Rector of Imperial College Sir Keith O’Nions FRS and Professor Chris Toumazou FRS (who has led the partnership work of the Expedition with Imperial College) will not now take place. The extraordinary delay of the team and the logistics of the VIP journey does not make that possible.

‘We are more determined than ever, after this disappointment, to deliver even more and even better. Particularly to our two partners – the inspirational Professor Winston Wong and everyone at Imperial College, led by its Rector, Sir Keith O’Nions, who are supporting us with such enthusiasm,’ says Andrew Regan on behalf of the team. ‘Expeditions like this deliver extraordinary highs and frustrating lows. These disappointments have made the Expedition team even closer. We feel very strong and resilient. Just raring to go.’

If anyone would like to send messages to the team as they wait for the green light – please send them to me, Marie Owens (PR and Publicity) at . I know your good wishes would help keep their spirits high
